BETHLEHEM, Pa. — As the city ramps up for Independence Day festivities, it reminds residents and others that celebrating the fun shouldn’t come at the expense of safety.

Bethlehem will put on a fireworks show around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, July 4.

“Fired from Sand Island, the fireworks will be visible from various areas of the city particularly around the City Center Plaza on East Church Street,” the city said in a news release.

Sand Island East will be closed at 7:30 a.m. on Independence Day for fireworks setup.

The American Legion Band also will host a free concert at 7:30 p.m. at City Center Plaza between City Hall (10 E. Church St.) and Bethlehem Area Public Library.

In the event of inclement weather, the festivities will be moved to 9:15 p.m. July 5.

Per the city fire marshal, consumer-grade fireworks are legal to purchase and possess across Pennsylvania, the city said.

The person using the fireworks must be 18 or older, but “may not intentionally ignite or discharge consumer fireworks”:

  • from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.;
  • on public or private property without permission of the owner;
  • within, or from a motor vehicle or building;
  • into or at a motor vehicle, building or another person;
  • while under the influence of alcohol, a controlled substance or another drug;
  • within 150 feet of an occupied structure (An "’occupied structure’ is defined by state law as a structure, vehicle or place adapted for overnight accommodation of persons or for conducting business whether or not a person is actually present.”)
