ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A portion of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed this weekend for a bridge replacement project.
The highway will be closed northbound from midnight to 6 a.m. Sunday between the Quakertown (Exit 44) and Lehigh Valley (Exit 56) interchanges, according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
Southbound traffic will not be affected.
The work is part of the highway’s reconstruction. The shutdown will allow beam work for the replacement of the Tilghman Street bridge, the commission said.
The Turnpike Commission suggests the following detour if headed north:
• PA Route 663 North 3.3 miles
• PA Route 309 North 9.3 miles
• Interstate 78 West 6.3 miles
• PA Route 309 North 1.0 miles
• U.S. Route 22 West 1.1 miles
• Re-enter at Lehigh Valley Interchange #56
The Turnpike Commission says Pennsylvania State Police and turnpike personnel will be positioned at closure points to assist drivers.
Work schedules may change based on weather conditions, according to the commission.
