Pennsylvania's statewide eviction moratorium expires

HARRISBURG, Pa. - WITF's Sam Dunklau reports the Democrat was exploring taking action himself if state lawmakers couldn't agree to a solution for renters soon.

The moratorium has been helping renters stave off eviction for five months during the pandemic.

Wolf had extended its end date in July, but has repeatedly said he does not have the legal authority to do so again.

On Monday, his office was hinting at issuing a new moratorium, but after a "thorough legal review," it found there's no way to do that without legislative approval.

Wolf says either way, extending that fix for renters is a temporary one.

"Whether we do it this month or next month or October or December, at some point it goes away and people will be facing a very unpalatable issue of eviction."

In the meantime, Wolf is pushing lawmakers to send out 200 million dollars in CARES Act money to help renters who can't make ends meet.

Thousands of people across the state could be facing eviction proceedings in the coming weeks - if no action is taken.
