Allentown, PA (July 25, 2023) – A flurry of early homers sunk the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (49-45, 13-8) as they fell 10-3 to the Syracuse Mets (40-55, 7-14) in a rain shortened game on Tuesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.
Syracuse jumped out early and often thanks to the long ball. Luke Voit blasted a three-run homer in the first before Tomas Nido ripped a two-run shot in the second and Carlos Cortes followed with another two-run homer in the third to make it 7-0 Mets.
The Mets plated two more in the top of the fifth as Luke Ritter stroked an RBI single and Cortes drove in a run with a bases loaded walk.
The IronPigs finally got on the board in the last of the fifth as Kody Clemens and Dustin Peterson bashed back-to-back solo homers, the third of the year for Clemens and the 11th for Peterson.
Syracuse got one of those two runs back in the sixth. A bases loaded walk to Ritter forced home a run to push Syracuse ahead 10-2.
Weston Wilson launched a solo homer leading off the last of the sixth, his 24th of the season (tying the MiLB lead), to make it 10-3 before the skies open and rain drowned out the rest of the ballgame.
Denyi Reyes (1-2) picked up the win for the Mets, working 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five.
Nick Nelson (3-2) suffered the loss for the IronPigs, allowing nine runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings,
The IronPigs continue their series against the Mets on Wednesday, July 26 with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
