Toledo, OH (July 18, 2023) – Trailing by a run going in to the top of the ninth inning, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (45-43, 9-6) scratched out two runs to steal the series opener, 4-3, over the Toledo Mud Hens (39-51, 6-10) on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
The IronPigs were on the board straight away to start the game as Jake Cave began the contest with a triple and Kody Clemens then singled him home.
Toledo tied the game in the third courtesy of a Grant Witherspoon solo homer.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the seventh. Weston Wilson led off the seventh with his team-leading 21st homer of the year to put the IronPigs ahead 2-1.
Two sacrifice flies in the eighth inning gave Toledo their first lead of the game in the eighth, setting the stage for the IronPigs comeback in the ninth.
Clemens walked to begin the ninth and advanced to second on a groundout. Simon Muzziotti then singled him home to tie the game and ultimately took second on an error on the play as well. A throwing error on a pickoff moved Muzziotti to third before he ultimately scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Luis F. Ortiz (2-0) secured the win for the IronPigs, working 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the game, allowing just a hit while striking out two.
Matt Wisler (4-2) absorbed the loss for the Mud Hens as he allowed two runs in two innings on two hits and two walks, striking out two.
The continue their series against the Mud Hens on Wednesday, July 19 with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
