When the new Haupert Union Building at Moravian University opens in the fall of 2025, it will be pre-certified for a wellness distinction as recognized by the International WELL Building Institute.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Student wellness resources, collaborative spaces, good grub, lots of natural light and room for socializing — all in one place.

When the new Haupert Union Building at Moravian University's Main Street North Campus opens in the fall, it will be pre-certified for a wellness distinction as recognized by the International WELL Building Institute.

As Moravian says on its website, securing an official certification for the "state-of-the-art centerpiece" building by the end of the year will make it the first of its kind in the Lehigh Valley and among about a dozen others in Pennsylvania.

"It’s a vibrant, inclusive space that prioritizes connection, health, and academic success, and it is coming to life thanks to support from our alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters."

The only other higher-education facility currently holding a WELL distinction in the state is at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in Philadelphia.

"At Moravian, we are dedicated to creating a student experience that supports the whole person," Moravian University President Bryon Grigsby said in a news release.

"The new HUB is more than just a building — it’s a vibrant, inclusive space that prioritizes connection, health and academic success, and it is coming to life thanks to support from our alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters."

The WELL building standard is a system for measuring, certifying and monitoring the performance of building features that impact health and well-being, according to the institute.

A look inside

The inside of the updated four-floor HUB will look something like the following:

First floor: Combined Health and Counseling Center.

Second floor: HUB desk, events management offices, Laurie Riley ‘82 Center for Career Success Suite, student organization suite with offices for University Student Government and Moravian Activities Council, Center for Inclusive Excellence lounge and office, food vendors, TVs and seating.

Third floor: Student Life Suite, Military Affairs & Services office and lounge, Mo’s Cupboard, a student resource pantry, commuter lounge, multi-faith prayer room, wellness center and an outdoor terrace for views of Makuvek Field nearby.

Fourth floor: More terraces, boardroom, conference room.

The original HUB was the first student union building on any college campus statewide when it was built in 1962, according to Moravian.

At that time, it was known as the CUB, or College Union Building.

It’s seen many renovations over the years, but current student needs call for broader updates to the facility, officials said.
