BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Moravian University will expand its graduate offerings in the world of counseling.

According to a news release, Moravian's School of Behavioral and Community Health will launch three new programs in fall.

  • The School of Behavioral and Community Health at Moravian University will launch three new graduate programs
  • The programs will begin for the fall 2023 semester
  • The new offerings will be an online Masters of Social Work, a hybrid Master of Arts in School Counseling and a hybrid Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling

The new offerings will include an online Masters of Social Work and two hybrid programs, a Master of Arts in School Counseling and a Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling.
However, choice of course mode will be available only to part-time students in the hybrid programs.

“So the full-time students come in and literally are lockstep; they have to take every class," Freda Ginsberg, dean of Moravian’s School of Behavioral and Community Health, said.

"Let's say it's the fall semester and we say, ‘Here's your five classes. This one's online, this one's at three on Tuesday,’ they have to follow that plan entirely throughout the whole program. It's the only way for us to guarantee graduating them on time.

“The part-time students might say, ‘Hey, I don't want to take a class on Tuesday, I'll wait till next semester,’ or ‘I don't want to take the class online. I'll wait till you offer it live,’ if that makes sense. They have a lot more flexibility because they're not sticking with the big plan.”

“We're just super excited to get all this off the ground, really all in response to the mental health crisis, not just regionally but nationally.”

The online masters of social work will be available online at the student's direction and open to people all over the United States. There will be an in-person weekend once a month called a “residency” that will include coursework and other program activities.

To fulfill their field education hours, students will work one-on-one with the director of field education to find appropriate placements in their areas.

“We're just super excited to get all this off the ground, really all in response to the mental health crisis, not just regionally but nationally,” Ginsberg said.

“Moravian just really wants to be a part of training the whole new workforce that's going to be needed to address what's going on.”
