Craig Neiman resigned from the Bethlehem Area School Board effective Nov. 8 due to conflicts with his work schedule.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bethlehem Area School Board of Directors is accepting applications to fill its Region 2 seat.

Director Craig Neiman, whose resignation will be effective Nov. 8, served as chairman of the Finance Committee. Region 2 consists of sections of Bethlehem wards, Hanover Township in Lehigh and Northampton counties and sections of some Lehigh County wards.

  • Bethlehem School Board member Craig Neiman resigned effective Tuesday
  • The board has 30 days to fill the Region 2 seat
  • BASD is accepting applications through noon Friday

Neiman said he is leaving the board after nine years because of his increased workload. In February 2021 he became the chief financial officer of the East Stroudsburg Area School District and he said conflicting board meeting schedules have made it difficult for him to regularly attend Bethlehem's meetings.

“I'm proud to have played a small part in the success of the district... I take comfort in knowing that the district is well positioned for the future.”

Under Pennsylvania law, the board has 30 days to fill the seat. Residents of Region 2 can apply by submitting a resume and cover letter to the board Secretary through noon Nov. 4. The term of whoever is appointed to that seat will serve until December 2023.

Bethlehem Area School District Superintendent Joseph Roy said the board will conduct public interviews of all candidates at the Nov. 14 Human Resources Committee meeting. The board is expected to appoint a new member at its Nov. 21 regular meeting.

Roy said Neiman was an outstanding board member.

“I will miss Mr. Neiman's professionalism, finance knowledge and unyielding support for BASD and public education."

Neiman said he’s enjoyed his time on the board.

“I'm proud to have played a small part in the success of the district during that time,” he said. “I take comfort in knowing that the district is well positioned for the future.”

Neiman said he hopes the person who takes his place is a fierce advocate for public education and continues the board’s tradition of effective governance.
