Upper Macungie planners back Amazon warehouse upgrades to boost truck access, parking

Upper Macungie's Planning Commission appeared ready to recommend site improvement plans which will better accommodate trailer traffic at an Amazon fulfillment center on Monday.

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. — Upper Macungie Township Planners appear likely to approve site improvements to better accommodate tractor-trailers at an Amazon warehouse.

During a Monday workshop, the commission recommended approval to increase parking stalls and improve access to a truck court at Amazon's ABE3 fulfillment center at 650 Boulder Drive, Breinigsville.

Ryan Kern of Herbert, Rowland and Grubic Inc. — the township’s engineers — explained the commission had evaluated the matter from a stormwater, parking and truck terminal movement standpoint.

Kern said the elimination of an overflow passenger parking lot will not have an impact on the plan, and neither will removal of about 8,700 square feet of impervious surface, which he said will not cause any stormwater issues.

“In the rear of their property, they're looking to restripe a parking lot to reconfigure for their trailers and build some different interconnectivity for maneuverability of their trucks,” Kern said.

The warehouse, which sits at AB2 at 705 Boulder Drive and ABE 4 at 1610 Van Buren Road, has operated for a decade and a half, Kern said.

Beyond restriping the truck court to accommodate additional trailer parking stalls and removing the passenger lot, developers also are looking into additional landscaping and sidewalks.

Upper Macungie Planners will review the matter again at a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18.
