BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. – Northampton County and Northampton Community College will partner to provide a free workplace safety course, the county announced this week.

The training, delivered by NCC instructors, will take place July 30 at the Northampton County Human Services Building at 2801 Emrick Blvd.

Interested participants must register for the training by July 20 by contacting Dawn Tomaino at 610-829-6309 or dtomaino@norcopa.gov.

Participants will cover how to avoid some of the most common workplace dangers, including slips and falls, fire hazards and electrical risks. The course will also include instruction on often-used hazardous materials, like cleaning products, and environmental risks like lead and radon exposure.

Participants who finish the course will receive a certificate of completion, according to NCC.

The training is geared toward employees of smaller municipal governments, nonprofits and similar organizations which might not be able to put together a similar training on their own, said Tina Smith, Northampton County’s director of community and economic development.

'One way we can help'

According to NCC, participants or their employers would typically have to pay around $125 per person for a similar workplace safety training.

“This is just a way to try to put a resource out there and keep everybody safe,” said Smith. “Instead of a municipality or nonprofit doing their own individual training, this was one way that we can help.”

“These offerings are part of NCC’s broader commitment to public safety and workforce development, which includes its role as an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer.”

This month’s free training will be the first offered through a partnership between Northampton County’s Department of Community and Economic Development and NCC. The county and the college have partnered on other free education, said NCC Assistant Director of Corporate and Public Safety Education Heather Ehritz.

“Thanks to a grant provided by the DCED, NCC launched several free programs—including basic construction and contractor training—to help individuals gain essential safety and operational skills,” Ehritz said.

“These offerings are part of NCC’s broader commitment to public safety and workforce development, which includes its role as an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer.”

So far, about half of the course’s seats have been filled, Smith said. Interested participants must register for the training by July 20 by contacting Dawn Tomaino at 610-829-6309 or dtomaino@norcopa.gov.
