NORRISTOWN, Pa. - State officials say the surge in cases among school-age children increases the risk that those who are asymptomatic could spread the coronavirus at games, practice and in locker rooms.
Nathan Davidson heads the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
“As a conference, we were already postponed until January 15 for competitions so alot of our schools have not even started yet. And we're not planning on starting.”
The conference, which includes 18 high schools in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, requires schools to complete 15 practices prior to the start of competitions.
But Davidson says the conference won’t penalize schools that decide to delay the start of their winter sports.
“People aren't going to be held liable if they want to postpone a little longer or anything like that. We’re not going to forfeit. If anything it's a no contest, if we have to go down that road. But we really wanna try to get our games in as much as possible and have our kids compete.”
Davidson says even before the Governor’s latest mitigation efforts, athletes were required to wear masks at all times and kept out of locker rooms to decrease possible exposure.
