COLUMBUS, Ohio — Words of shock and support were pouring into social media amid reports that Lehigh Valley wrestling great Sammy Sasso was shot in the stomach Friday night near the Ohio State University campus.
Sasso, an Ohio State wrestler who has a year of eligibility remaining, was shot during a robbery attempt in Columbus, Ohio, according to multiple reports.
LehighValleyLive.com reported Sasso had surgery and was in serious condition.
The news outlet cited a source close to the family as saying Sasso was expected to make a full recovery.
Sasso is a three-time All-American and two-time NCAA finalist. At Nazareth Area High School, Sasso was a two-time PIAA state wrestling champion.
Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan released a statement saying Sasso's injuries were not life threatening. He said Sasso was being treated at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
ABC6 in Columbus reported the shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. and no suspects were taken into custody.
Our thoughts & prayers are with Sammy & the Sasso Family!
