SLATINGTON, Pa. — Sometimes, when one looks to the heavens for help, Mother Nature is busy with other things.

With rain forecast for Friday evening, the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce has decided to hold its annual tree lighting ceremony virtually at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street.

The event under the gazebo will take place at 6:15 p.m. and a video of the tree lighting will be available on the chamber’s Facebook page a short time later.

“The apps showed the chance of rain between 58 and 72%. So we made the call on Thursday morning to do the tree lighting virtually.

“We were looking at four different weather apps for Friday evening,” said Kylie Adams-Weiss, assistant vice president of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber and liaison to the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber.

“The apps showed the chance of rain between 58 and 72%. So we made the call on Thursday morning to do the tree lighting virtually.

"We originally were going to have it from 5 to 7 p.m., with music from the Slatington Elementary School student band. But with the rain coming, we didn’t want their instruments to get damaged.”

Adams-Weiss said the health and safety of the residents in the community are held in the highest regard by the chamber.

“While this is not the festive celebration we were originally planning, we know that the joy of the holidays is more than just one day,” she said.

“Supporting our local business community and spreading holiday cheer will certainly last through the season.”
