ALLENTOWN, Pa. — An Allentown man who hit two state police troopers with his pickup truck during a traffic stop was killed when he fled, his truck hit a pole and building, and he was ejected, state police said.
Troopers from state police Troop M in Fogelsville tried to stop the 1999 Ford F-150 at 12:13 a.m. Sunday near 29th and Lehigh streets in Allentown, state police said.
The truck lost control near 12th and Vultee streets in Allentown and hit a fire hydrant, utility pole and the Lehigh Valley Logistics building at 1801 S. 12th St. The truck driver was ejected from his vehicle.State police Troop M release
The truck had failed to make a required stop, police said.
As troopers exited the patrol vehicle and tried to take the 27-year-old truck driver into custody, he hit troopers with his vehicle "in an attempt to cause serious bodily injury to the troopers and fled the scene," police said in a release.
Troopers got back into their patrol car and pursued the fleeing vehicle.
The pickup driver lost control near 12th and Vultee streets in Allentown and hit a fire hydrant, utility pole and the Lehigh Valley Logistics building at 1801 S. 12th St., according to state police.
The driver was ejected from the pickup, state police said.
Troopers immediately rendered medical assistance to him and Allentown EMS took both him and the two troopers to Lehigh
Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
The Lehigh County coroner pronounced the pickup driver dead at the hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday at the county coroner's office and forensic center, Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said in a release.
The man has been positively identified, and his family has been notified, but his name will not be released publicly until the autopsy is completed, the release said.
Both troopers were treated and released.
