Labor Day roadwork: Here's where disruptions are anticipated throughout the Lehigh Valley

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Labor Day weekend traffic may get sticky in a few places.

Various road work projects on major routes throughout the Lehigh Valley will be underway during the well-traveled holiday, the state Transportation Department has announced.

Notable projects include road work on Route 22 and Route 33, today through Friday, Sept. 1. Those projects are expected to cause various lane restrictions due to the construction.

Also expected to cause lane restrictions and delays are PennDOT nighttime construction on Interstate 78 from Exit 55 (Route 29) and the Northampton County line, from Monday, Aug. 28, to Saturday, Sept. 2.

Some crack sealing and maintenance projects throughout Lehigh and Northampton counties may be subject to rain delays.

Plans announced by PennDOT District 5 in the Lehigh Valley are:

Bethlehem Township

PennDOT construction on Route 22 between Route 512 and Route 33

  • 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 25 to Sept. 1
  • Expect lane restrictions in both directions for construction work, with traffic disruptions including weeknight single-lane conditions during work hours, as well as weekend single-lane conditions continuously.

PennDOT bridge inspection on Route 22 East between Route 512 and Route 33

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 29
  • Expect eastbound lane restriction
  • Potential for rain delays

Other Northampton County municipalities

PennDOT pavement rehabilitation work on Route 33 between Route 22 and Main Street, Tatamy

  • 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 25 to Sept. 1
  • Expect lane restrictions on weeknights, and 24 hours on the weekend beginning 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday

Allentown

PennDOT construction on Interstate 78 between Exit 55 (Route 29) and the Northampton County line

  • 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 28 to Sept. 2
  • Expect lane restrictions, delays

Upper Macungie, Lower Macungie and South Whitehall townships

PennDOT construction on Interstate 78 between Exit 49 (Route 100) and Exit 54 (Route 222)

  • 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 27 to Sept. 1
  • Expect lane restrictions in both directions for roadway patching

North Whitehall Township

PennDOT crack sealing maintenance

  • 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 28 to Sept. 1. Potential for rain delays
  • Scheidys Road and Rising Sun Road from Old Post Road and Neffs Laurys Road
  • Shankweiler Road from Route 309 to Mauch Chunk Road
  • Coffeetown Road from Orefield Road to Levans Road
  • Haasandahl Road from Route 100 and Route 309
  • Expect lane restrictions with flagging

Washington Township
