BETHLEHEM, Pa. — AAA predicts more than 54 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this week, making it third-busiest Thanksgiving travel period since the organization started tracking in 2000.
With so many cars on the road, the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M — covering Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks counties — want to make sure people get where they're going safely. It's why they've announced the official holiday enforcement period, which will run from Wednesday through Sunday.
Occurring annually, the program targets drivers "who aggressively operate their motor vehicle in a manner which is dangerous to members of the public," a news release said.
In addition to targeting motorists who may operate a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, state police will focus on:
- Seat belt and child seat belt violations
- Speeding
- Texting while driving
- Handheld phone use
- Prohibited use of hearing impairment devices (drivers wearing earbuds, etc.)
- Careless driving
- Reckless driving
During the 2021 Thanksgiving enforcement period, Troop M investigated 77 crashes and made 35 DUI arrests. They also issued 513 speeding citations.
