MACUNGIE, Pa. - A Lehigh Valley man is heading south to assist with Hurricane Ida relief efforts. The Red Cross volunteer boards a flight Tuesday and will help distribute supplies when he gets to the devastated area.
Jim Rogers is on his way to his first deployment with the American Red Cross. The Macungie resident is now retired, but spent most of his career in logistics and warehousing, so that’s what he will be doing in hurricane-ravaged Louisiana.
“I'll be supplying the things that the shelters need. So, I'll be working with people, I'll be probably be loading trucks with water and, you know, maybe cots, blankets, what we call a comfort kit, which is just some essentials that everybody needs a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a facecloth, that kind of stuff,” Rogers said.
The Red Cross is flying him into Beaumont, Texas, since the airports in New Orleans and Baton Rouge are not accessible at this time.
He’ll receive his specific assignments when he arrives in Texas and will spend two weeks sorting supplies and getting them to the shelters.
