LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie's House district changed because of reapportionment. His performance in recent elections did not.
Mackenzie defeated incumbent state Rep. Gary Day on Tuesday in the Republican primary for the 187th House District. The victory all but assures Mackenzie another term in the state Legislature because no one ran on the Democratic ticket in the primary.
The race pitted two sitting GOP lawmakers against each other after the process of redistricting moved Mackenzie's Lower Macungie Township home from the 134th District he's represented since 2012 into the 187th District.
Day, of Heidelberg Township, has represented the 187th District since 2009.
With all precincts reporting, Mackenzie received 5,612 votes to Day's 3,539 -- just over 61 percent of the vote, according to Lehigh County election returns that will remain unofficial until certified.
