BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A weekend event will aim to help people prepare for the fall flu season and meet back-to-school health criteria.

Free screening and low-cost immunizations will be offered 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lehigh Valley Walmart stores.

  • Free health screenings and shots, such as flu and COVID-19 vaccines, will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday
  • Walmart will hold its Wellness Day at its Lehigh Valley stores
  • Free COVID-19 shots will be offered and glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and vision screenings also will be offered at select locations

The offerings will be part of Walmart's Wellness Day, which will take place at the same time in pharmacies at 4,600 Walmarts across the country.

Participating Lehigh Valley locations are in Whitehall, Bethlehem, Lower Macungie and Lower Nazareth townships.

"Affordable immunizations are offered at every event, but for this particular event, we'll be focusing on some back-to-school needs for you to be at high school students, college students returning or first go into dorms.
Ben Gibson, pharmacy manager at the Whitehall Walmart.

"Really just to engage with our health care teams," said Ben Gibson, pharmacy manager at the Whitehall Walmart.

"Affordable immunizations are offered at every event, but for this particular event, we'll be focusing on some back-to-school needs for you to be at high school students, college students returning or first go into dorms.

"In addition, educators, teachers, mom, dad, everyone — so flu shots, of course, are available, COVID boosters, pneumonia shots, shingles, HPV and pneumococcal vaccines especially for those college students."

Free glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and vision screenings also will be offered at select locations.

Immunizations also will be administered at a low cost, including flu, HPV, pneumonia, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox/shingles), whooping cough (TDAP), and Hepatitis A & B.

Free COVID-19 shots also will be available.

Many of the shots being offered are required for school-aged children. Families will have the opportunity to meet with the pharmacists at each location.

"For many of these folks, Walmart is often their first or maybe only stop in their health care journey."

"For many of these folks, Walmart is often their first or maybe only stop in their health care journey, especially in the more rural and inner-city area," Gibson said.

Kevin Host, Walmart’s senior vice president of pharmacy, said, “As families enter a new school year, there’s a peace of mind that comes with a quick health screening or immunization.

“Walmart is known for being a back-to-school destination, and Wellness Day at our pharmacies brings an added layer of convenience and community to that process.

"We’re thrilled to be part of this fun, exciting season and look forward to connecting with our customers and patients.”
