The Lehigh Valley DUI/Highway Safety Task Force wants people to be safe on the road and while using fireworks this holiday weekend.

SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. — Booze, belts and burns are the “three B’s” that Lehigh Valley law enforcement officials are urging people to keep in mind this Fourth of July holiday.

Officials say they typically see a spike in injuries and violations this time of year, and reminded people that although this time of year can be fun, it also can be dangerous.

  • The three Bs are booze, belts, and burns
  • Police officers and fire fighters want people to be responsible when drinking, wear a seatbelt, and be safe when lighting fireworks
  • Law enforcement says to use common sense when heading out to celebrate the 4th of July

The Lehigh Valley DUI/Highway Safety Task Force held a news conference at the Greenawald’s Fire Company in South Whitehall Township Thursday ahead of the holiday weekend, to emphasize the importance of staying safe.

"Make sure you understand local ordinances and state law regarding what types of fireworks can be used."
Chief Andrew Garger, Greenwalds Fire Department

“We're having an event to kick off the summer and encourage some safe behaviors by everybody as they enjoy the Fourth of July and the rest of the summer,” Greenawald's Fire Chief Andrew Garger said.

“We've seen fireworks all year long recently. However, the weeks before and after the Fourth of July, they're certainly much more prevalent."

'Use your common sense'

The chief spoke about the legality of fireworks in Pennsylvania and went over safety precautions to take when lighting them off.

“Be aware of your surroundings when you're setting them off," he said. "Make sure you understand local ordinances and state law regarding what types of fireworks can be used, and what your limitations are, and, as always, be careful not to inadvertently start a fire.”

“Use your common sense. If you're going to consume alcohol do so responsibly."
Lieutenant Greg Emery, Pennsylvania State Police - Fogelsville

Lt. Greg Emery of the Pennsylvania State Police - Fogelsville also spoke about the dangers of drinking and driving, especially over holiday weekends.

“We have a heightened awareness and we try to increase our patrols and try to increase our DUI checkpoints," Emery said.

"And get extra people out there roving around and addressing the aggressive driving, which is tailgating people riding with earbuds and texting, tailgating, speeding and driving impaired."

He said the Fourth of July, along with Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, are the busiest times when it comes to people traveling to parties.

“Use your common sense," he said. "If you're going to consume alcohol, do so responsibly. And if you think you've had too much, then either stay where you're at or get a designated driver or ride service.”

In addition to emphasizing the importance of using safe firework practices and consuming alcohol responsibly, the event recognized members of local law enforcement for their work in keeping Lehigh Valley communities safe.
