ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Dump your unnecessary drugs this weekend.

Oct. 29 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day when law enforcement around the country collects and safely removes pills and medications that are no longer being used or expired.

- Allentown will offer three drop-off locations
- They will be places to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications safely
“Somewhat tied into the opioid epidemic and the overdose epidemic is the fact that a lot of these issues start with prescription medications,” said Allentown Health Director Dave Synnamon. “These are medications that can be found in the home and can be accessed by anyone in the home and if you're not using your medications, it's best to dispose of them safely.”

In Lehigh County, people can drop off at three locations, including the Allentown Police Department Headquarters at 425 W Hamilton street, Walgreens at 1702 Tilghman street, or Wegmans at 3900 Tilghman street.
“At these locations there's law enforcement present. They collect the medications, they put them in a box, they seal the box that is incinerated,” said Synnamon.
The event is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 29th. Those who cannot drop off during that time can do so at a permanent drop-off location at Allentown Police Department Headquarters. That box is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
