ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Get ready for a day of mixed weather that could end with a bang.

  • Saturday's weather in Allentown promises a blend of conditions, with the morning sun giving way to potential showers and thunderstorms later in the day
  • The Storm Prediction Center puts the Lehigh Valley at a slight to marginal risk of severe weather
  • Hazards include hail and damaging winds, and a tornado can't be ruled out. But most of the severe weather should be confined to the northeastern part of the state

After a gorgeous day on Friday, a destabilized airmass could turn scattered thunderstorms severe on Saturday, the National Weather Service warns.

While severe weather should mostly be confined to northeastern Pennsylvania, the Storm Prediction Center includes the Allentown area in a slight (two out of five) risk for severe hazards, including hail and damaging winds.

The northern tier of Pennsylvania, including just north of Lehigh and Northampton counties, are at enhanced risk.

A tornado or two can't be ruled out, the SPC's outlook said.

While the morning and afternoon will be mostly sunny, with temperatures in the upper 80s, the Lehigh Valley will see an increased chance for showers and storms in the evening — mainly after 8 p.m.

Storms are expected to gradually dissipate after sunset, though isolated showers and storms will remain possible overnight, the weather service forecast discussion said.

Earlier this week, a tornado touched down in Allentown's Midway Manor neighborhood.

The twister was confirmed late Tuesday after a National Weather Service survey team inspected the damage.

As residents continue to pick up the pieces and move forward on repairs, Sunday’s weather is anticipated to be more agreeable, with a high of 86 and plenty of sunshine.
