Watching the skies with Brad Klein

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Brad Klein reviews upcoming astronomical highlights with Bethlehem’s ‘Backyard Astronomy Guy,’ Marty McGuire.

This week, a few thoughts on Marty’s favorite planet, Mars, along with notice of a special event.

Join the Watching the Skies guys at Shankweiler’s Drive-In next Tuesday, June 17, for a special filmed presentation on the "red planet," followed by a screening of the 1985 film "Explorers."

The Backyard Astronomy Guy has a whole video presentation explaining why he thinks Mars is the most exciting planet in the solar system, outside of Earth, and the video's premiere will be at the "Retro Tuesday" event at Shankweiler’s.

A recent selfie by NASA's Perseverance rover on the surface of Mars.

Of the planet Mars… “I love it,” McGuire says. “It's got the biggest mountain on any planet of our solar system. It's got robots driving around on it. It's just fun for a whole lot of reasons.”

And Mars is clearly visible in the western sky this week. Just look to the west after the sun has set. Mars will be heading toward the western horizon, but does not set until after midnight.

Its reddish color will help distinguish it from nearby stars.
