Strong winds to sweep through Lehigh Valley — then comes the cold

Wind chill next Tuesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Temperatures set to make a run into the upper 60s on Wednesday will give way to a gusty breeze, forecasters say, with noticeably cooler weather on the way for the Lehigh Valley.

A wind advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, with westerly winds at 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph expected.

The advisory covers all of Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties along with Upper Bucks and western Montgomery counties.

The National Weather Service said winds could strip remaining autumn color from the trees and pull down some limbs, with scattered power outages possible.

Temperatures will struggle to recover in the aftermath, with mostly sunny skies and a high of 53 degrees expected Thursday, along with northwest winds gusting as high as 30 mph.

A cold plunge on the way

The tumble in temperatures is a sign of things to come, forecasters say, with a fairly active pattern continuing through the weekend and into early next week.

Eyes are on a storm system bringing potential impacts to the area Sunday and Monday.

“This is not a big storm,” EPAWA meteorologist Bobby Martrich said in his latest video update.

“There’s some showers with this on Sunday, [which] maybe starts as early as late Saturday night.”

Martrich said showers will continue through Sunday afternoon “on the lead of a very deep trough that’s going to bring in some much colder temperatures.”

While the system could set the stage for snow in parts of the Ohio Valley, West Virginia and the Appalachians, there’s no signal for wintry precipitation in our area.

“Trends have been against that,” Martrich said.

He said the bottom line is that the Lehigh Valley will go from slightly milder temperatures again over the weekend to a winter plunge in short order.

“We have temperatures here with departures from average of 10 to 12 degrees,” he said.

The weather service has forecast highs next Monday and Tuesday of 45 and 43 degrees, respectively, and wind chills in the upper 30s on Veterans Day.
