LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. — The Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary is closed to the public until further notice after a bridge collapse, officials said Thursday.
The bridge into the sanctuary, at 3701 Orchid Place, collapsed about noon Tuesday while a propane truck was crossing it, Wildlands Conservancy President Christopher M. Kocher said.
“There were no injuries, and there was no environmental damage,” Kocher said in a Thursday email. “The vehicle was removed from the property later that evening.
“Wildlands staff remained on site to work with emergency personnel.”
The sanctuary is closed, and there is no public access to the property, according to the email. Officials are handling community and environmental education programs on a case-by-case basis.
“On behalf of our board and staff, I want to express my deep gratitude to the fire, police, all emergency personnel, township, local and state officials," Kocher said.
"Yocum Towing & Recovery, and everyone who responded quickly and remained at the scene to ensure the safety of the community, those involved and the natural environment."
Wildlands officials have launched a webpage, where updates on the incident will be posted.
The sanctuary stretches 77.5 acres, holding the Wildlands’ headquarters, the main office, and an outdoor classroom for environmental education. There also are three miles of trails.
