BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The big question this week, as per political scientist Chris Borick: How to define American citizenship.
In this episode of Political Pulse, Borick and host Tom Shortell talk about recent policies and talks surrounding citizenship.
While President Donald Trump has challenged concepts of citizenship — including an attempt to overturn more than a century of precedent on birthright citizenship — Shortell notes that these issues have ended up before the Supreme Court numerous times.
Several months into Trump's second presidency, Borick said he feels hesitant to "wager" on what could come out of the Supreme Court. Though, he anticipates "it's gonna be hard for the court to come up with a decision that really overturns what has been precedent and what has been accepted law."
Borick also said the country has seen the Supreme Court "dance" on important rulings, like the power of the lower courts.
Could politics continue like that throughout the remainder of Trump's term?
Borick said he thinks it's "probably the safe route forward."
