BETHLEHEM, Pa. — We're less than two months away from Election Day.
While many patriotically sport the iconic "I Voted" sticker, local elections still historically bring out low voter turnout. Political Pulse host Tom Shortell notes that's mostly because voters feel they don't know enough about the candidates.
Brad Osborn is looking to change that — in Lehigh County, at least.
Osborn, a former South Whitehall Commissioner and Lehigh County Commissioner, is hosting several candidate forums so voters can meet and speak with those on the ballot. He joins Tom on this episode of Political Pulse to explain why.
Osborn is paying for the events to take place.
Some candidates may rely on heavy campaign strategies that can end up being costly, like mailers. This way, Osborn expressed, candidates have a level playing ground to engage with voters.
"I feel it's worth it," Osborn told Shortell, noting that money sometimes can can get in the way of candidates "who would do real well in the office that they're seeking."
This way, those candidates — and voters who might otherwise feel too uninformed to vote — "have a way to participate in the process."
The events are free to both candidates and voters. Here's when and where they'll take place:
- South Whitehall Township Commissioner candidates: Luther Crest in Allentown at 6:30 p.m. (Sept. 29).
- Lower Macungie Township Commissioner candidates: The township Community Center at 6 p.m. (Oct. 7)
- Lehigh County Executive candidates: Lehigh Carbon Community College at 6:30 p.m. (Oct. 8).
