PALMER TWP., Pa. – The Palmer Township Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously voted in a new chairman.
Democrat Michael Brett, the board's former vice chairman, took over the leadership position.
- Palmer Township's Jeffrey Young has stepped down as chairman of the Board of Supervisors
- Young nominated vice chairman Michael Brett to the position of chairman
- Brett was confirmed and appointed by all members of the board with no opposition
Jeffrey Young, the former chairman, nominated Brett as he stepped down from the chair. Young said he has decided to take a role simply as a member of the board.
“It’s fun but it’s too consuming. We need younger blood,” said Young.
Young has served on the board since 2014. He previously held the position from 1987 to 1995 and currently has two more years on his term, which goes through December 2025.
Young was recognized with a plaque of appreciation by the board for his service in the leadership position.
There were no other nominations for the top seat, nor opposition to Brett’s placement.
Brett said in the coming year he and the board look forward to finishing up zoning for Palmer Township and updating the township’s Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance.
Brett also said he's looking forward to seeing new recommendations from the environmental steering committee.
“It feels great to know that I have the collective support of my board to take on this position,” Brett said. “I’m looking forward to working with all of them in the upcoming year.”
During the meeting Brett credited Young as part of the reason he wanted to be a township supervisor.
He shared that Young moved in next door to Brett’s family when he was a teenager and encouraged him to get involved with the township.
Eventually Brett took on a role on the Palmer Township Planning Commission in 2018, and ran for vice chair and won in 2021.
Joseph Armato will take Brett’s place as vice chair of the supervisors. Armato had no competition for the post, and was approved unanimously by the board. Ann-Marie Panella nominated Armato to the position.
The Palmer Township supervisors meetings take place 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month in the township building. An additional meeting is held at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday following the first Monday.
