LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. — A 182,000-square-foot lot in Lower Macungie Township now is on the way to getting more commercial space in addition to its in-progress Home Depot location.

  • A second building is set to join the Home Depot being built at 5887 Hamilton Boulevard in Lower Macungie Township
  • The retail and commercial building will feature multiple tenants and will include an exterior patio for outdoor eating and electric-vehicle charging stations
  • The Home Depot is set to open this summer

The Macungie Crossing development by RD Management LLC is proposed to be expanded with a second building alongside the Home Depot at 5887 Hamilton Blvd.
The 10,000-square-foot retail building would have multiple tenants, with the number of them not specified, and would share a parking lot with Home Depot.

The modification to the original site approval allowing the second building will go before Lower Macungie Board of Commissioners on Thursday, March 2.

Lower Macungie Planning Commission also recommended the plan this month.

The rear of the structure would face Hamilton Boulevard and will be accessed via a road leading into the Macungie Crossing lot on the same side of the property as Home Depot.

"We have worked at great lengths with the applicant to ensure that the proposal meets our design guidelines for the township as well as our plan concepts for the Hamilton Boulevard corridor," township Planning Director Nathan Jones said.

The modification also includes conditions to the site following discussion with officials, including exterior patio for outdoor eating, fencing, a retaining wall façade to be approved by the township planning department and a monument sign requiring similar approval.

Six electric vehicle charging stations also are planned for the site.

The Home Depot was approved for the site more than 15 years ago, according to public documents, but now construction of the building is near completion after the dormancy, set for a summer opening, according to site managers.

"We now have another service senator that will be able to put a feather in the cap of the township as something that is right in line with what we're trying to do on Hamilton," Jones said.

The site is part of a growing retail and commercial landscape for Lower Macungie Township, with the site in close proximity to Hamilton Crossings and The Shoppes at Trexler.
