Pennsylvania is still in the process of vaccinating hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers. But other people may soon be able to start getting shots as well. In some cases, they already have.
Of about 1 million eligible healthcare workers in the state, about 300,000 have been vaccinated
Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine says Pennsylvania is trying to make sure every healthcare worker gets the shots before moving on to the next group. But that’s changing.
“We have heard that some state providers that have vaccinated people in group 1B when they have vaccine available but there isn’t someone from 1A available. That is absolutely fine with me. We anticipate moving, statewide, to provide vaccinations to people in group 1B soon,” Levine says.
Group 1A includes healthcare workers. Group 1B comprises people over the age of 75, education workers, postal service employees, first responders and others.
“We don’t want any vaccine wasted, so, if they vaccinate someone in 1B instead of wasting it, that’s fine,” she says.
Levine adds there isn’t a timeline yet for when the state will officially move to 1B. The PA Department of Health now has an online tool to help healthcare workers find a where to get vaccinated.
