Tornadoes, Rollerbites and more: What is Rutter’s, the convenience chain pitching its move into the Lehigh Valley?

PALMER TWP., Pa. — Its slogan is "Why Go Anywhere Else?" — a loaded question in a Lehigh Valley landscape dotted with a Wawa or a Sheetz at seemingly every turn.

Representatives from Rutter’s, a convenience store and gas station chain with 86 stores headquartered in York, Pa., made a pitch Tuesday to the Palmer Township Planning Commission for a location at 1280 Main St.

The proposed 13,467-square-feet convenience store and quick-service restaurant would have 142 parking spaces — 44 for cars, two for accessible parking, and 96 for trucks.

It would also be the area’s first Rutter’s, which describes itself as “the oldest vertically integrated food company in the country.”

Here’s what else to know about the chain:

It claims a long and rich agricultural heritage

According to its website, the history of Rutter's dates back over 270 years.

“In 1747, the Rutter family farm was instituted in York and still operates to this day," it says. "Then in 1921, George and Bud Rutter started their own dairy, the Rutter Bros. Dairy, selling milk and other dairy products to the local area. Further expanding the business, the family’s 2nd generation founded Rutter’s convenience stores.”

Tornadoes, Rollerbites, Walking Tacos and more

The three-page menu available online reads more like an “anything you want we have” advertisement.

Breakfast options include burritos, scrambled bowls, breakfast baskets, cheesy hashbrown wraps, waffles, cinnamon rolls and more.

But if you’re diving into lunch or dinner, there are burgers, fried shrimp, tavern cod, chicken wings and even bowls of lo mein or fried rice.

Off the Roller Grill, tornadoes (think a grab-and-go taquito) are available with options such as cheesy pepperjack, pepperoni and cheese, or even French toast and sausage.

Beer, slushies and spirits are available in Pennsylvania Rutter's stores at the following days and times:
