Go fish: Minsi Lake gets $175,000 for boat launch area improvements

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Minsi Lake will get $175,000 in improvements to its boat launch area, thanks to the state Fish and Boat Commission.

Much of the funding is slated to increase accessibility, including adding Americans-with-Disabilities-Act-compliant parking spaces, ADA-accessible trails connecting parking, new restrooms and dock improvements.

The improvements also would allow people more easily access an existing adaptive canoeing and kayaking program on the east side of the lake.

The grant, which was awarded to Northampton County, also will allow for solar lighting to be added to existing parking on the east side of the reservoir.

Future plans also involve a pedestrian bridge to connect the facilities on the east and west sides of Minsi Lake.

“Minsi Lake is a tremendous asset to the Slate Belt and all of Northampton County and this Boating Facility Grant will allow Northampton County to make important improvements to the boat launch on the east side of the lake,” state Sen. Lisa Boscola, D-Northampton, said in a release.

“Recreational opportunities will be enhanced for Northampton County residents and visitors to the Slate Belt through this state funding.”

According to the release, funds for the Boating Facility Grant program are derived primarily from boat registration fees, state motorboat fuels tax, restricted revenue accounts and, when available, through various federal assistance or grant awards.
