UPPER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - The Allentown-based Greater Valley YMCA has received a $3 million federal grant that will support the establishment of the Saucon Creek YMCA.

  • The new YMCA space will focus on offering quality child care programs and serve as a community space to gather
  • A public forum will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11

The Community Project Funding grant will cover pre-construction and land development expenses in Upper Saucon Township, including site preparation, geotechnical and environmental engineering services, utility connections and initial construction costs.

The new Y will be built off Preston Lane, near Upper Saucon Township Community Park and DeSales University.

“The new YMCA space in Southern Lehigh will not only provide quality child care programs to set our kids up for success, but will also serve as a community space to gather, connect, and develop the foundations for a healthy life,” U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, D-Lehigh Valley, said in a news release.

She noted the importance of child care affordability, accessibility and reliability, which is part of the new YMCA’s mission.

“This is a huge step to help establish the Saucon Creek YMCA,” said Dave Fagerstrom, president of the Greater Valley YMCA.

He will speak about the project at a public community forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11. The meeting will be held at Southern Lehigh High School and aims to “educate the public and gain public support,” Fagerstrom said.

He also said that the Greater Valley YMCA will continue to seek input and feedback from the local community.

The project had been approved by Upper Saucon Township in May 2021. The ultimate goal is to raise $23 million through donations, fundraising and grants, according to Fagerstrom.

In a community forum in November, some local community members showed their enthusiasm for the new YMCA, especially regarding possible recreational spaces such as a pickleball court, swimming pool, fitness centers and more.

Officials are hoping to have the facility open in 2025.
