- Court filings show at least 154 stores will close, including an Allentown location
- It comes a week after the pharmacy chain filed for Chapter 11 protection
- Four other local stores have closed since September
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Less than a week after Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy, court documents show at least 154 stores will close — including an Allentown location.
The pharmacy chain filed for Chapter 11 protection on Sunday and had reportedly been negotiating the closure of up to 500 stores nationwide.
While Rite Aid hasn’t confirmed that number, the first wave includes a store at 1628 S. 4th St., Allentown, NBC News reported, citing court documents.
Rite Aid also recently closed a store at 361 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown, and another shuttered this week at 2178 Union Blvd., Bethlehem, on the border of Allentown's East Side.
Other locations at 25th Street in Palmer Township and Northampton Street in Easton closed in September.
Area locations still operating
These are the remaining Lehigh Valley-area locations still operating after the latest closures:
- 7719 Main St., Fogelsville
- 6822 Hamilton Blvd., Allentown
- 27 N. 7th St., Allentown
- 3145 Hamilton Blvd, Allentown
- 1650 N. Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown

Will there be additional closures?
Rite Aid has more than 2,200 locations in 17 states, and the bankruptcy court filing said it may close additional stores.
In 2022, Rite Aid agreed to a $30 million settlement to resolve lawsuits alleging pharmacies contributed to an oversupply of prescription opioids.
The company has taken on a financial restructuring plan as a result, and bankruptcy filing was part of that process.
Rite Aid remains the third-largest U.S. drugstore chain behind CVS and Walgreens, but all three are closing stores.
Walgreens previously said it will shutter at least 150 nationwide by Aug. 31, and CVS also is cutting costs to get ahead of losses. As many as 900 stores could reportedly close through the end of next year.
