Train engines on the bank of the Lehigh River, partially submerged, shortly after a derailment Saturday, March 2, 2024, off Riverside Drive in Lower Saucon Township.

LOWER SAUCON TWP. Pa. — Cleanup continued Monday at the site of a train collision and derailment that shut down tracks along the Lehigh River on Saturday.

Norfolk Southern crews and contractors remained there, a rail company spokesman said Monday, but the company wouldn’t elaborate on how many cars jumped the tracks, what they were hauling and where they were going.

Photos immediately after the crash and derailment showed about a dozen or so cars off the tracks and two locomotives on the river bank, partly in the river.

“We will continue to fully support the NTSB’s investigation.”

Authorities said three trains were involved and no injuries were reported. An unspecified amount of diesel fuel and polypropylene plastic pellets spilled into the river, they said.

“We will continue to fully support the NTSB’s investigation,” spokesman Connor Spielmaker said. “Norfolk Southern will learn from this incident as we constantly strive to improve safety.”

The crash happened about 7:15 a.m. Saturday along Riverside Drive in the Steel City section of Lower Saucon.

Riverside Drive has been closed since the weekend but is expected to reopen Monday afternoon, said township Police Chief Thomas Barndt.

On Sunday, NTSB officials said they collected data and turned the scene back over to Norfolk Southern for cleanup. A preliminary report from NTSB is expected in about three weeks.
