FREEMANSBURG, Pa. - A bicyclist who died in a collision with a pickup truck went through a red light and likely suffered a fatal head blow after being thrown from the bike, according to the borough police chief.
“It was a very unfortunate event,” said Chief Jonathan Itterly. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased’s family.”
Dwain S. Englert Sr., 58, of Allentown, died of multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death was accidental, said Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek.
The crash occurred about 3 p.m. Tuesday on Pembroke Road, at Clearfield Street, Itterly said.
The pickup driver stopped immediately and was not at fault in the collision, the chief said.
Itterly said three witnesses and video of the crash confirmed the bike went through a red traffic signal downhill on Pembroke and collided with the pickup, which was turning onto Pembroke Road.
“The bicycle did not stop for the light,” he said. “He was moving pretty well and struck the vehicle going through the intersection. He was thrown from the bike and his head hit the curb.”
The cyclist was not wearing a helmet, authorities said.
It happened as Englert was eastbound on Pembroke; the pickup had been stopped at a traffic signal on Livingston Street and turned on to Pembroke when the light turned green, according to police.
Pembroke Road is the boundary between Freemansburg and Bethlehem; the Freemansburg side of the intersection is Clearfield Street while the Bethlehem side is Livingston Street.
Englert was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Anderson Campus, where he was pronounced dead, the coroner said.
