HANOVER TWP., Pa. — Nonna Sulina’s Sicilian Kitchen & Grill says it is making a comeback.
It's just unclear when.
Shortly after a two-alarm fire Sunday morning at the Italian restaurant, its Google page was updated to say "temporarily closed."
Social media posts showed the beginning stages of the fire engulfing the building in smoke.
"At this time, we do not have a timeline for when we will be able to reopen our doors. But please know that we are committed to coming back stronger and better than ever, with the support of our amazing community behind us."Nonna Sulina's Facebook post
"At this time, we do not have a timeline for when we will be able to reopen our doors," a Nonna Sulina's Facebook post said.
"But please know that we are committed to coming back stronger and better than ever, with the support of our amazing community behind us."
The post also thanked the first responders who battled the second-alarm fire for around three hours.
At the scene, Fire Chief Scott Van Why of the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Company said the fire "extensively damaged" the restaurant.
But Van Why said that because of the active fire investigation, he could not share more details.
Support from the community
Giacomo Sgroi called it "heartbreaking" as he sat on a curb in the parking lot, accompanied by two employees and regular customers who passed through to express their condolences.
The support didn't stop there.
Many people took to the Lehigh Valley Food and Travel Facebook group.
"Prayers for them all!" Ashley O'Connell commented Sunday. "Such a great restaurant, our go to Italian place! Hope the damages aren't too bad."
Other commenters said they hoped the employees were OK. All three who were doing prep work that morning, including owner owner Giacomo Sgroi, were safe and unharmed.
"I am so sorry to hear of this," Adam Smith commented under Nonna Sulina's initial Facebook postannouncing the restaurant's closure.
"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time patronizing your beautiful establishment. I pray that you will be able to reopen soon, and am glad that everyone is safe."
The Facebook post said the Sgroi family would keep the community updated on restoration progress and that they "look forward to welcoming you back with open arms when the time comes."
Nonna's Italian Market on 2112 Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem still will be open to the public. The market closed the day of the fire, but the Nonna Sulina's Facebook post said "many beloved Nonna Sulina's products" will be added to the Italian market.
