BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The highly anticipated opening of Donerds Donuts has been eight months in the making, and the doors remain closed.

But if you’re clamoring for fresh craft donuts, the wait is almost over.

  • Donerds Donuts announced last fall they'll be opening a Bethlehem location
  • After pushing back its opening date, a new grand opening date has been announced
  • The menu will include macarons, donuts, coffee and possibly croissants

After pushing back its opening, Donerds confirmed Friday it will hold a soft opening next week and will celebrate its official grand opening on Aug. 3 at 3 E. 4th Street, Bethlehem.

The timing of the announcement was appropriate, falling on National Junk Food Day.

"The grand opening will be Friday, August 3.”

“Today we are actually training staff, so next week we’ll do a soft opening (next Thursday and Friday), and the grand opening will be Friday, August 3 at 9 a.m.,” the shop told LehighValleyNews.com.

The menu will be macarons, donuts and coffee. It might also offer croissants.

The new location

The business originated in the back of a 1981 Volkswagen bus on the streets of Santiago, Chile.

Annabel Figueroa and her husband, Andrew, opened their first brick-and-mortar location there in October 2019. They later moved to Jim Thorpe, nestled in the southern Poconos in Carbon County, and started a donut and coffee shop at 76 Broadway.

Last fall, LehighValleyNews.com was the first to report the new Bethlehem location of Donerds Donuts in Southside Bethlehem.

It will be the first Lehigh Valley location.

"I'm a city person and Jim Thorpe is a really small town. Every time I wanted to escape, I went to Bethlehem, because in my opinion it's the nicest small city around. There's so much to do and amazing businesses."

"I love Bethlehem, and it was at the top of our list," Annabel Figuero said last year.

"I'm a city person and Jim Thorpe is a really small town. Every time I wanted to escape, I went to Bethlehem, because in my opinion it's the nicest small city around. There's so much to do and amazing businesses."

What foodies can expect

The Donerds in Jim Thorpe not only serves fresh craft donuts, but it offers drip and Nitro coffee from La Colombe and Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

Figuero said the new shop in Bethlehem will be modeled off the Jim Thorpe location, with 16 to 20 flavors of donuts each day, including seasonal donuts.

The classic donut flavors include favorites such as raised glazed and chocolate ring, along with options such as peanut butter cup, Oreo cheesecake, cannoli, bacon maple and more.

Summer flavors included Strawberry Shortcake, Key Lime Pie and Berry Shortcake. Donerds might have the Strawberry Shortcake flavor for its grand opening.

“We know you are super excited but please keep that excitement because soon enough you will have the best donut shop you've ever had the chance to experience,” Donerds said on Facebook this week.

The menu will change daily and will be posted on social media.
