WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. – A little bit of Down Under could be coming to Whitehall Township.

Outback Steakhouse, the Australian-inspired restaurant, is scheduled to present a land development plan for township supervisors’ approval at their meeting at 7 p.m. tonight, Feb. 13.

  • An Outback Steakhouse proposed for the parking lot at Lehigh Valley Mall
  • It would be the third Outback in the Lehigh Valley
  • Whitehall Township commissioners are scheduled to consider the plan for the project Monday, Feb. 13

The plan got township Planning Commission approval last month.
The 4,000-square-foot restaurant would be built at 1300 Grape St., in an outlying part of the Lehigh Valley Mall parking lot, off the mall entrance from Grape Street and just across Grape Street from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Outback also would be just 500 yards from LongHorn Steakhouse at 1035 Grape St., which opened in 2010. Another steakhouse restaurant, Lone Star, at 1410 Grape St., closed months before LongHorn opened after a 16-year run. It’s now the site of Keystone Pub & Grill.

Outback already has two Lehigh Valley restaurants – at Hamilton Crossings at 800 N. Krocks Road in Lower Macungie Township, and at 3200 Emrick Blvd., Bethlehem Township.

Outback Steakhouse serves seasoned steaks, chicken, ribs, seafood and pasta, and its signature breaded Bloomin’ Onion appetizer, in a casual atmosphere that recalls the Australian Outback.

According to its website, Outback has 704 U.S. locations, including 27 in Philadelphia.

It serves seasoned steaks, chicken, ribs, seafood and pasta, and its signature breaded Bloomin’ Onion appetizer, in a casual atmosphere that recalls the Australian Outback. It’s owned by Bloomin' Brands, which is based in Florida and opened in 1988.

The company also owns the Carrabba's Italian Grill and Bonefish Grill restaurant chains. Bonefish Grill has had a location at Lehigh Valley Mall for about 15 years.

In addition to Red Lobster, other Lehigh Valley Mall parking lot restaurants include Chuck E. Cheese’s, Golden Corral and Shake Shack, which opened last year.
