BANGOR, Pa. — A portion of the Slate Belt has gone Hollywood, if just for a couple of days.
A new HBO limited series starring Mark Ruffalo is filming near a quarry off North Main Street in Bangor, a borough official confirmed Friday.
"Filming for the HBO show will take place on private property today and tomorrow," Borough Manager Stephen M. Reider said in a phone interview.
Residents of the area posted about the traffic caused by filming on the Facebook group, Slate Belt Chatter.
"Was told it probably won’t air until March of next year. Can’t believe all the traffic in Bangor. Unfortunately, it’s only going to last for one more day," wrote one person.
Another said she was happy about the activity.
"People let’s stay positive about something good being brought to Bangor! We need it! Take the traffic. People are working hard to make it a nice production. Show your SLATER PRIDE," wrote another.
Follow up to 'Mare'
The limited untitled series is a spin-off from "Mare of Easttown" by creator and Berwyn native Brady Ingelsby. Shooting has been ongoing in the Philly suburbs this spring, according to media reports.
"Mare of Easttown" nabbed four Emmy Awards in 2021 and put a spotlight on the energy and character of Delaware County and its people. The cast included Oscar-winner Kate Winslet.
It's unclear if Ruffalo or other cast members are spending time in the Bangor area. An HBO spokesperson said in an email that it's too early to disclose details of the show or film locations.
According to a news release from HBO, Ruffalo, known for roles in "Dark Waters," "Avengers: Infinity" and "Poor Things," will star as the lead in the project as well as its executive producer.
The "Spotlight" star is no stranger to the cable network.
He also served as executive producer on "I Know This Much Is True" — the 2020 limited HBO hit that featured Ruffalo as twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey.
According to Variety, the new series tells the story of an FBI agent leading a task force to stop a string of drug-house robberies led by an unlikely man.
In January,Ruffalo told Deadline his new role depicts him as a complicated cop. “He’s badly damaged but fighting for good."
It's set in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia.
It will also star Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu and Raul Castillo, Variety reported.
Philadelphia native and filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar is directing the project.
