The group is best known for its platinum country hit “Elvira,” which crossed over to the Top 5 on the pop chart in 1981.
But the group was founded in the 1940s as the Oak Ridge Quartet, making regular Grand Ole Opry appearances in 1945, and became a popular Southern gospel group in the 1950s.
The name officially was changed to the Oak Ridge Boys in the early 1960s, and it started to concentrate on country music in the mid-1970s.
Starting with 1977’s Top 3 Country hit “Y’all Come Back Saloon,” the group has had 37 Top 40 Country hits, with 17 of them going to No. 1.
The group has released 89 albums, of which 26 have charted Top 40 and three hit No. 1. It has had 12 gold and platinum albums.
The group released its most recent album, "Mama's Boys," a year ago.
Three of its current four members — lead singer Duane Allen, baritone William Lee Golden and bass Richard Sterban — have been together since 1973.
In 2000, the Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
The group also played the State Theatre in 2017.
