EASTON, Pa. — A record number of high schools in the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey will participate in this year's Freddy Awards — the State Theatre's annual recognition of Lehigh Valley high school musical theater.
In less than two months, thousands of students from Northampton and Lehigh County and Warren County, New Jersey, will begin to present their spring musicals.
This year, 31 schools will participate in the Freddy Awards, the State Theatre said in a release.
"With more schools, the energy in the room will be higher than ever.”State Theatre Chief Executive Officer Shelley Brown
Those schools whose performances are judged the best will be nominated to compete in the 24th annual Freddy Awards on May 21 at the theater.
“Seeing 31 schools participate is a true testament to the importance this area places on the performing arts,” Freddys Coordinator Kori Lotito said.
“We are thrilled to be the place where these schools congregate and create a vibrant, supportive and joyful community.”
State Theatre Chief Executive Officer Shelley Brown said, “We couldn’t be more excited.”
“We are welcoming an all-time high number of high schools to the program this year," Brown said. "The format will remain the same, but with more schools, the energy in the room will be higher than ever.”
The Freddy Awards were created in 2003 and are awarded each year during a ceremony at the State Theatre in Easton and are broadcast live on Channel 69 WFMZ-TV.
This year’s Freddys nominations will be announced at noon May 7.
The live broadcast of the awards ceremony will air at 7 p.m. May 21 on WFMZ and stream at WFMZ+.
