BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Phillies have defied the odds! They made it to the World Series for the first time since 2009. Fans hoping to catch the game in person may want to break out their piggy banks because one ticket to the game in Philadelphia could cost more than an entire trip to Houston for an away game.
The euphoria from Sunday's Game 5 win over the San Diego Padres to capture the National League Championship segued Monday into a new reality for Philly fans: they'll likely have to spend the equivalent of a mortgage payment (or for a family, a down payment on a home) to see their team play the Astros at Citizens Bank Park.
TicketIQ, a ticket search engine and aggregator tracking prices, put the average secondary market list price at $2,288 for the series (as of Tuesday morning). Tickets in Philadelphia were more than double the price of those in Houston. The average list price for games in The City of Brotherly Love was $3,228, while the average price in Space City was $1,584.
In other words, the cost to take a family of four to the World Series in Philly is around $13k — and that's before you leave the Lehigh Valley.
Here's the cost breakdown for additional add-ons:
- The toll calculation on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for a 2 Axle Class 1 vehicle (AKA your standard car) runs $5.10 with E-ZPass or $10.50 for toll-by-plate.
- Gas prices will set you back an average of $3.92 a gallon for regular (AAA's average price as of Tuesday, 15 cents above the national average). Mid-grade runs around $4.28 and premium was at $4.55. (Driving a Diesel vehicle? Tuesday's price was at $5.93 a gallon)
- A pre-paid parking pass at Citizens Bank Park will run you $25 online, giving access to open lots at the South Philly sports complex. You might be able to find cheaper options on Spot Hero.
- Concession prices (as of June 2022) were nearing $5 for a hot dog, $9 for a souvenir soda, $13 for a cheesesteak, $14 for a pizza and $10 for a beer.
If you're doing the math, $3,228 would net you roughly 645 hot dogs, 322 beers, 230 pizzas, 248 cheesesteaks or 358 sodas.
The total cost for just one person if you bought one of everything during your trip to the game (factoring in about $25 for gas and tolls)?
Roughly $3,330.
