The National Weather Service placed the Lehigh Valley and other parts of eastern Pennsylvania under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2023.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh Valley is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory covered more than a dozen counties in eastern Pennsylvania, including Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe.

  • The watch includes several counties in eastern Pennsylvania until 9 p.m.
  • The chance of a severe thunderstorm will linger through Saturday evening
  • Sunday's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies in the Lehigh Valley

The rain held off for most of the day Saturday and temperatures climbed into the mid-70s, but showers and possibly a thunderstorm are likely in the region after 5 p.m.

A south wind could reach 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph, the weather service said in its updated forecast.

A watch is used when the risk of hazardous weather has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location or timing is still uncertain.

A warning is issued when a hazardous weather is occurring, imminent or likely.

The chance of precipitation in the Lehigh Valley on Saturday night is about 90%. Any thunderstorm would come before 1 a.m. Sunday, with some storms having the potential to be severe with damaging winds and heavy rain.

Saturday night's low will be near 49 degrees, the forecast says. Precipitation could be between a half and three-fourths of an inch.

The weather service said Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high near 64 and a west wind of around 10 mph.
