  • The event will be held May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lehigh Service Center on Hausman Road.
  • Customers can recycle working room air conditioners and dehumidifiers and receive a $10 rebate check for each appliance

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 13 at the Lehigh Service Center, located at 827 Hausman Road in Allentown.
During the event, residents will be able to recycle working room air conditioners and dehumidifiers after which participants will receive a $10 rebate check for each appliance they recycle.

There is no limit on the number of units they can bring but the units must be in working condition and registrants must have an active account with PPL.

“Local events like these, which are held in communities across our service territory each year, make it easier for our customers to get rid of unwanted appliances in their homes and properly dispose of them as well," PPL Electric Utilities Residential Program Manager Mary Ann Merenda said. "It’s a win-win for the customer and the environment.”

To drop off appliances, customers are required to register in advance on the PPL Electric website.

Besides the event, PPL also provides free at-home pickups of working, older refrigerators and freezers.

"Customers can receive a $50 rebate for each refrigerator or freezer and PPL Electric will haul it away," said Maggie Sheely, regional affairs director of PPL.

Included in the recycling initiative is an opportunity for participants to donate non-perishable food items to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania, as well as local residents in need.

Non-perishable food items, according to PPL, include peanut butter, soup, vegetables, pasta and pasta sauces, cereal and juice. The donations will go directly to local residents facing food insecurity. Participants can make their food donations to any PPL Electric representative present at the event.

PPL Electric Utilities also offers free at-home pickups of working, older refrigerators and freezers, providing customers with a $50 rebate for each appliance.

The company will arrange for the pickup and proper disposal of the appliances. Customers interested in scheduling an at-home pickup can click here.

Recycling air conditioners requires fee in City of Allentown

To find out more available recycling services in the city, Sheely suggested that "customers check with their municipalities."

In Allentown, residents can bring their appliances and metal items to the city's Recycling Drop Off Center, which is open 24/7, at 1400 Martin Luther King Jr Dr., according to the City of Allentown website.

However, the city does not collect and recycle items left on the curb. Larger items have to be scheduled for pick up.

There is a $20 fee for the proper disposal of all appliances containing a refrigerant chemical or FREON.
