ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A man was injured in a shooting Thursday night in downtown Allentown, according to authorities.
Officers were called about 10:45 p.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Hamilton Street, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, Allentown police said in a release.
The man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries and is expected to survive, police said.
Thursday's shooting was at least the fourth in less than a week in which gunmen injured or killed people in Allentown.
Three shootings in six hours
Gunfire erupted in the city on Dec. 29, with three shootings reported within six hours.
A 1-year-old boy and his grandmother were shot and killed after a man broke into their home, Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan said Thursday.
Sebastian Serrano and Ada Ortiz, 44, both of Allentown, were found with multiple gunshot wounds in the living room of a house in the 100 block of Chestnut Street, according to authorities.
Gabriel Cartagena, 43, surrendered at the Lehigh County Jail on Thursday night, less than five hours after Holihan held a news conference and declared him a wanted man who was "armed and dangerous."
Cartagena is accused of shooting Ada Ortiz and Sebastian, as well as 66-year-old Leandro Ortiz, who is expected to survive his injuries.
Police allege Cartagena pointed a gun at a 7-year-old boy before Leandro Ortiz — Ada’s husband — stepped in the way and was shot in the chest.
Holihan said there was no indication Cartagena knew the victims.
Shortly after police reached the scene of the fatal shooting, officers were called to reports of gunfire about four blocks away. Police said they found a man and woman with serious gunshot wounds, but both are expected to survive.
Dimitrius Bashir Campbell, 23, of Allentown, was arrested Dec. 30 and charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting in the 300 block of Ridge Street, according to police.
Police have said there was a second shooter in that incident.
Officers were called less than six hours later to the 1600 block of Hanover Avenue, where three people were shot; all are expected to survive, police said.
Authorities said Thursday they do not believe the three shootings last weekend are connected at present.
