ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Whether you play for the NFC or the AFC, are a seasoned veteran or a rookie, there's one thing football players can agree on: Coming together for a good cause is fun.
On Saturday, June 29, sports stars from across the NFL (and beyond) are exchanging their cleats and 'sneaks for softball mitts as the 3rd annual DeVonta Smith & Friends Celebrity Softball Game returns to Coca-Cola Park in Allentown.
Proceeds from the event go toward both St. Luke's and IronPigs charities, which benefit youth recreational and educational programming in the Lehigh Valley.
The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, Smith will be entering his fourth year as a receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles.
"DeVonta is hoping for this to be the biggest turnout yet," organizers said in a news release. "The Lehigh Valley has been phenomenal welcoming in the event each year and DeVonta can't wait to top the first two years!"
Last year's event was an overwhelming success, with thousands of fans, young and old, descending upon Coca-Cola Park for the chance to meet stars such as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, defensive end Brandon Graham, and (then) Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who became an Eagle this offseason.
"It feels good to get all the love and support from the fans," said Barkley at last year's event.
All three players will be returning to the park this year, along with some new faces. (Charlotte Hornets power forward Grant Williams, anyone?)
For some players, it's more than a softball game; it's a homecoming.
Barkley, who recently signed with the Eagles on a $37.75 million contract, is a Whitehall native who played for Penn State. He will be joined at the game by Parkland alumnus Kenny Yeboah and Nazareth alum Jahan Dotson.
The day's festivities include a pre-game home run derby at noon, followed by the actual softball game at 1 p.m. For $200, families can purchase an exclusive meet n' greet with Smith following the game.
Tickets are limited and can be purchased on the event website.
