Allentown is one of the best places to retire, new report finds

Allentown is the third-largest city in Pennsylvania.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Allentown has been named one of the top places people should consider when it's time to retire.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Allentown ranks ninth across the country in the category of “Best Places to Retire” in 2022-23 along with four other Pennsylvania metropolitan areas in the top 10, including Lancaster (1), Harrisburg (2), York (5) and Reading (10).

The assessment includes the happiness of local residents, housing affordability, tax rates, health care quality and more.
Out of the four main criteria, Pennsylvania scores well on housing costs.

Allentown’s median home price now is $332,690, with the median monthly rent being $1,090, the article said.

“Several districts constitute Allentown proper, each with a unique identity and flair,” it continued.

The area's rich historical and industrial background, the surrounding mountains, and neighborhoods full of restaurants, theater, art, outdoor activities and sports all contribute to the high quality of life here.

Allentown offers a variety of lifestyles and its proximity to both Philadelphia and New York gives residents access to additional experiences and options to explore.

The article also credits the city for its reuse of manufacturing facilities and other industrial cites as a big reason for its resurgence in popularity.

Out of the 150 evaluated places, Allentown is also relatively safe to live in, as well, ranking at No. 23.
