HARRISBURG — If you’re among the procrastinators who has put off the annual task of filing taxes, Pennsylvania is here for you.

The state Department of Revenue will extend its customer service hours for taxpayers to get help over the phone as the April 15 filing deadline approaches.

“We know from our experience that many of our fellow Pennsylvanians who have personal income tax questions benefit from speaking directly with one of our trained representatives on the phone.”
State Revenue Secretary Pat Browne, in a release

“We know from our experience that many of our fellow Pennsylvanians who have personal income tax questions benefit from speaking directly with one of our trained representatives on the phone,” state Revenue Secretary Pat Browne said in a release Monday.

Taxpayers can call 717-787-8201 to speak to the Customer Experience Center, Browne said.

Extended hours will be:

  • April 9 through 12 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • April 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • April 15 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We also have a number of customer resource options on the department’s website that provide answers to common questions and will help taxpayers get their returns filed on time,” Browne said.

Getting questions answered

People can visit the Online Customer Service Center at https://revenue-pa.custhelp.com/.

It contains answers to hundreds of common income tax questions such as “Who must file a personal income tax return?” or “How do I find out where to file and pay my local taxes?”

The site also let taxpayers securely submit a question to the Department of Revenue in a process similar to sending an email, the release said.

Once filed, people can use the site to check the status of their refund or call 1-888-PATAXES. Callers will be prompted for their Social Security number and requested refund amount to obtain the current status.

Taxpayers who would rather speak to a customer service agent in person can make an appointment to visit the Department of Revenue’s district offices.

A Social Security card and photo ID is needed for tax-filing assistance.

File for free

Browne also wanted to remind taxpayers they can use the online filing tool at mypath.pa.gov to file a state tax return free.

All taxpayers who received more than $33 in total gross taxable income in calendar year 2023 must file a tax return by midnight, Monday, April 15, 2024.

For those who file at the very last minute, the IRS will consider a paper return to be on time if it is properly addressed, has enough postage, is postmarked and put in the mail by the deadline.

For e-filers, the time zone where your return is transmitted will determine whether it is on time.
