BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Though they've all been out of grade school as students for some time now, four Bethlehem Area School Board members again claimed their spots on the honor roll Monday.

Pennsylvania School Boards Association recognized BASD board members Emily Schenkel, Winston Alozie and Kim Shively for five years on the panel, while board President Michael Faccinetto was celebrated for his 15 years.

“The Honor Roll Service Award is the Association’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to those individuals who exemplify leadership and statesmanship, giving unselfishly of their time and talents for the future of our public schools and putting something back into their communities through the guidance of the education of youth."

“The Honor Roll Service Award is the association’s way of saying thank you to those individuals who exemplify leadership and statesmanship, giving unselfishly of their time and talents for the future of our public schools and putting something back into their communities through the guidance of the education of youth,” BASD Assistant Superintendent Maureen Leeson said.

PSBA, based out of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, is a membership organization and nonprofit promoting public education and relevant services for school board directors statewide.

Outside of service with the school board, Alozie is chief executive officer of Bethlehem Boys & Girls Club.

Schenkel, a founding member of BASD Proud Parents group, has two children who attend Northeast Middle and Liberty High schools.

Shively, an anthropology professor at Kutztown University, has had four sons educated in the district.

Faccinetto is a fifth-grade teacher at Joseph P. Liberati Intermediate School out of the Southern Lehigh School District.

Beyond the awards, Monday also marked both the first day of the school year and the first day of a labor strike for the district’s 80 clerical and secretarial workers, who are asking for higher wages and more paid time off.

This week, PSBA also recognized three board members from the Athens Area School District in Bradford County.
